We artists sure are a creative bunch of people!!! While many of our friends and colleagues drag their feet through life, seemingly blindly, we draw inspiration from the never ending kaleidoscope of sights and sounds that seem to dance around us everywhere we go; finding new ways to channel and capture these amazing experiences – perhaps in the form of a lyric, a song, or a picture.
This is one of the most wonderful things about being a creative soul, but unfortunately it can be our downfall as well. While we are thoroughly engrossed, stirring this bubbling pot of imagination, it can be all-too-easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.
Just like when preparing to drive to a place you’ve never been before, there are three important questions you need to ask yourself before setting out on your musical journey:
1. Where am I now?
2. Where do I want to be?
3. How will I get there?
Don’t worry if you can’t answer all of three right now – the good news is that the answers to these, and also to many other questions that you may not have even considered yet, can be uncovered by building a Music Marketing strategy!
Creating a Music Marketing strategy will not only help you to better understand your motives for making music, it will also provide you with a clear path to your ultimate destination.
The most important things you will need to think about (and document) when putting together your strategy are:
- your brand identity
- the type of content you plan to create and share
- who your target audience is
- what promotion techniques you will use to reach your audience
- how you will interact and engage with your fans
- how you will track results and measure your success
- making adjustments to your overall strategy according to these results
Now don’t worry if some (or all) of these topics are new to you; this is just a starting point – an overview of your Marketing strategy, in a nutshell! We will be discussing each point individually, and in much more detail over the coming weeks and months.
