With a zillion funky 3rd party Twitter tools & apps bouncing round on the Net these days, it is way too easy to get distracted. You could lose hours and hours of your life to the endless super-cool (but hardly necessary) reports you can run on your account.
The secret to effectively tracking and reporting on your Twitter progress really boils down to just a few key figures. Learn to understand these measures, and you will be running your campaign like a true Social Media guru in no time.
Follower/Following Counts: This would have to be the most obvious, and the simplest place to start your tracking. Simply record the numbers from your Twitter profile page each week, and (hopefully) watch them grow!
Engagement Rates: This refers to all of your @Mentions, Retweets and Direct Messages. By recording the numbers for each of these, you can monitor the changes week by week. By keeping close tabs on these figures, you should have no trouble establishing whether the followers you are picking up are genuine fans, or just “follow-back buddies”
Click-Through Rates: Like engagement, click-through is a fantastic way to measure how many people are responding to your content, and to your call-to-actions. Drop a few Bit.ly links on your timeline for a fast and effective way to test the substance of your followers!
While it may seem like a very simple approach, what I can tell you from experience is that, despite being accepted as gospel, the advanced statistics and reports being spat out by the 3rd party developers are quite often inconsistent and inaccurate. Stick with what is simple and reliable, and keep your piece of mind!
